Daily 5 Math

This section is set up to share ideas about Daily 5 Math.  I'm not sure what "the sisters" have for this, but I didn't have the patience to wait (I'm sure many others have the same mentality!)  I just started this week and came up with this:

Writing: (Students write word problems, math stories, and things such as multiplication rhymes-a strategy shared at a data team meeting last year!)  If students create word problems, they are reviewed and added to the answering questions section of the Daily 5.

Answering: Here students answer story problems related to the topic.  On Monday, they answer questions from the Pre-Test.  This is then used to help them create their problems in the writing section of Daily 5.

Fact Fluency: Students work in their math workbooks, complete other sheets printed off and kept in their math folder, work with a partner on flash cards, hot dots, etc.

Computers:  Currently I have a 30-day trial to the IXL website.  I hope to purchase a year membership ($200) when the trial runs out (although I'm debating because my POD almost always has issues that end up causing more problems than it seems worth it--any suggestions here, I would love!).  I have a rotating group schedule for the computers.

A couple of things to note:  It's really a Daily 4! I want math conversations happening so the room has more structure than reading-one side of the room is answering problems, the other is creating problems, and fact fluency can spread out.  The schedule isn't always perfect, but looks like this:

Bellwork: 10min
Whole group: 9min
Small group and rotation 1: 12 min
Whole group: 9min
Small group and rotation 2: 12 min
Whole group: 9min
Small group and rotation 3: 12 min

That's 73min total.  I have an 80min math block- this leaves room for transitions, procedure reviews, and student self assessment of performance.

I can't wait to hear what others are doing and if you have any questions about this, let me know by leaving a comment!  Thanks
